CoolSculpting - How Does it Work?

Learn about how coolsculpting works

There are times when fat located on the body proves to be stubborn and hard to remove. For many years, patients had liposuction to address this issue, but the recovery took a good amount of time since it is an invasive procedure. Now, patients who want to eliminate this fat can have the noninvasive treatment known as CoolSculpting. Interested in learning how the procedure works to get rid of fat? The answers are in this informative article and our examination of CoolSculpting also includes an inside look at the treatment from Cosmetic Town TV:

CoolSculpting – What is it?

CoolSculpting is a treatment that freezes fat and also eliminates stubborn fat in the targeted area of the body. This procedure was approved by the FDA in 2010 and it is also referred to as cryolipolysis.  Since fat freezes at a higher temperature than skin, the device cools the skin to a temperature where it is able to freeze and destroy fat without damaging any of the skin in the treated area.

CoolSculpting – How Long Does It Take to Perform?

How Long Does CoolSculpting Take to PerformThe CoolSculpting device holds the areas of the body targeted by the doctor between two paddles. The paddles cool to the desired temperature and the doctor will leave them in position for anywhere from a half hour to an hour (or more). While the paddles are in position, the freezing process will destroy fat cells in the treated area.

The final results are not immediately visible. They might not be visible for a few months but some changes to the body will be seen within a few weeks. The fat cells that are dead after the treatment will be naturally expelled by the body. The final results are considered to be permanent as the fat cells that are removed from the body cannot grow back or return.

CoolSculpting – Who is an Ideal Patient?

The procedure is not intended for patients who want to lose weight. Instead, it is often recommended for patients who have not been able to get rid of certain areas of fat through diet and exercise. Once a person is determined to be an ideal patient, CoolSculpting can be used to kill fat cells in a number of areas including the thighs, the jawline, the back, under the chin, the stomach, the upper arm, and under the bra line.

A person who is not an ideal patient is someone with loose skin, is considered to be obese, is not able to handle cold very well, and is pregnant or nursing an infant.

CoolSculpting – What are the Side Effects?

There are some side effects that patients need to know about when it comes to having a CoolSculpting treatment. Some of the side effects include pulling or tugging on the skin, soreness, swelling, mile to moderate pain, and (rarely) paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH) where the amount of fat cells increases in the body instead of decreasing.

Even with chances of these side effects, CoolSculpting is considered to be a safe and effective treatment as the common side effects will resolve on their own.

CoolSculpting – How Much Does It Cost?

The first thing to know about the cost of CoolSculpting is that it is not considered to be a medically necessary treatment. In other words, insurance will not cover the cost of the treatment.

The final price depends on a number of items including the size of the body part or area being treated, the section of the country where it is performed, the number of sessions performed by the doctor, and any additional fees charged by the doctor or the facility.

In general, the average price is anywhere from $1500-$4500 but patients need to check with their doctor of choice for a more definitive number.

CoolSculpting – Alternative Treatments

For patients that do not want to have CoolSculpting or are not considered to be ideal patients, there are alternative treatments available to them. Some examples include liposuction which is an invasive surgical procedure that can remove fat deposits, Kybella injections to break down fat cells in the chin area, Vanquish which is a radiofrequency treatment that kills fat cells using heat, and EMSCULPT which is an electromagnetic treatment that works to break apart fat cells and tighten the muscles.

Before a person has a CoolSculpting treatment, they need to schedule a consultation appointment with a board-certified medical professional who is trained and experienced in performing the procedure. The doctor will examine the body of the person who wants to have the treatment to determine how much fat is present on the targeted areas of the body and if CoolSculpting will be able to properly treat the issue and destroy the fat cells. If the person is not an ideal patient, the doctor can give the patient advice on the best medical options available to them when it comes to destroying and removing fat cells from the body.
